Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has become a victim of a scam that led to them paying out £1m.
The trust said in a BBC news article between £900,000 and £1m was stolen last month in a "sophisticated" scam.
An ongoing investigation by the NHS Counter Fraud Agency (NHSCFA) to recover funds, is probing the fake invoice fraud that tricked the trust into paying out on a single bogus invoice.
Chief executive Joe Rafferty confirmed the trust had been "the victim of fraud which has led to the theft of significant funds by external third parties".
"For someone to possibly target the trust in this manner is a malicious attempt to undermine the work of the NHS, which is facing challenging times," he said.
The trust also runs in the local area, Ashworth Hospital, the Broadoak Unit in Broadgreen and healthcare in HMP Liverpool.
Another recent invoice scam involved a gang of five men who defrauded Melton Borough Council out of more than £200,000.
